In the latest twist to Sheffield Wednesday’s financial crisis, club owner Dejphon Chansiri reached out to South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard last week, reportedly asking for assistance in resolving a £1 million tax dispute with HMRC.
Labour MP Clive Betts disclosed that Chansiri appeared to misunderstand the scope of the mayor’s authority, suggesting he could intervene to prevent HMRC from pursuing the club. Betts described the exchange as “detached from reality.”
The Championship side remain in turmoil following their entry into administration, points deduction, and a series of missed wage payments. With the team rooted to the bottom of the table, Chansiri’s tenure appears to be nearing its end as the club searches for a new owner.
Dejphon Chansiri’s disastrous reign at Sheffield Wednesday appears to be nearing its end, and it’s undoubtedly for the best.
His handling of the club has proven he was never equipped for the role of owner. With administrators now searching for new buyers, there’s finally a chance for a fresh start at Hillsborough.
The Owls deserve better leadership — and that’s exactly what they’ll get once Chansiri is gone.
