Derby County coach John Eustace gave his verdict over the draw match against Southampton F.C.

John Eustace praised Derby County’s spirit and determination after they battled back to earn a hard-fought point against Southampton.

The Rams were forced to chase the game early on when Adam Armstrong muscled through the defence to put the visitors ahead. But Derby responded well in what turned out to be a thrilling contest, with both goalkeepers producing top saves to keep the score level.

“I thought it was a terrific game of football between two very good sides,” Eustace said. “We were up against top Championship and Premier League-quality players, and we went toe to toe with them.

“I was proud of the lads’ effort. Their first goal was far too easy — similar to the one we conceded the other night — and we want teams to work harder to score against us. But the reaction after that was outstanding, and that’s exactly what this group is about.

“You can see we’re getting sharper and fitter every week. The football today was really good, and what pleases me most is that our heads never drop. Even when we’re tired or under pressure, the players keep going. That’s who we are — a tight, united group.

“Everyone connected with Derby County should feel positive about what’s ahead. The reaction after going behind was brilliant, and I’m proud of the entire squad.”

Eustace also reserved special praise for Patrick Agyemang, who netted his first goal for the club to go with two assists in his opening five games.

“It was a fantastic goal and fully deserved,” he said. “Patrick was a bit below his usual fitness level — it’s his third match in a week — and he’s still adjusting to the Championship, but his effort was outstanding.”

The Derby boss also highlighted Max Johnston’s improved delivery from wide areas, noting the progress he made since Tuesday’s draw with Charlton.
