Derby County injury blow confirmed by John Eustace as Wrexham and Southampton play-off push gets boost

Derby County suffer major injury blow as John Eustace delivers update

Derby County’s push for promotion suffered another setback on Tuesday night after a narrow 1–0 defeat to Millwall F.C. at The Den.

A first-half strike from Josh Coburn in the 43rd minute proved decisive, leaving Derby unable to find an equaliser after the break. The result has left Eustace’s side three points outside the play-off places, having also played one more game than promotion rivals Wrexham A.F.C..

However, the defeat wasn’t the only concern for the Rams, as they were also dealt a worrying injury blow late in the match.

Josh Vickers ruled out for weeks

Goalkeeper Josh Vickers was forced off in the 86th minute with a groin injury and replaced by Richard O’Donnell.

Vickers had stepped into the starting line-up in recent weeks due to the absence of Jacob Zetterström, who has been sidelined by illness. The 29-year-old had started Derby’s last seven league matches but now faces a spell on the sidelines.

Eustace confirmed after the match that Vickers will likely miss between six and eight weeks as he recovers from the injury.

“It’s not as bad as what we thought, but it’s still going to be six to eight weeks,” Eustace explained.
“Initially we thought it would be a really long one, but it’s still going to be the majority of the season.
It’s a big blow for him, but it gives Rich an opportunity to step up.”

Play-off race implications

The injury leaves Derby short of options in goal at a crucial stage of the campaign. With Zetterström still unavailable and no confirmed return date, O’Donnell may now be tasked with stepping in for the remainder of the run-in.

The setback could also have implications for the promotion race, potentially boosting the play-off hopes of sides like Wrexham and Southampton F.C. as the Championship season approaches its final weeks.

With the regular campaign concluding on 2 May, Vickers’ recovery timeline leaves his availability before the end of the season uncertain, adding further pressure on Derby as they attempt to stay in the hunt for a top-six finish.
