Bobby Madden may have retired, but that has not prevented him from remaining informed about the significant events in Scottish football.

The former whistler for the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) frequently shares his opinions on the contentious refereeing decisions on a weekly basis, and Celtic were on his mind this weekend.

Madden observed the Hoops’ match against Kilmarnock, which Brendan Rodgers’ team won 2-0 to maintain their position at the summit of the Scottish Premiership. Callum McGregor and Nicolas Kuhn scored the goals.

On Sunday at Rugby Park, there were moments of controversy for both clubs when Nick Walsh declined to dismiss Joe Wright for an elbow on Adam Idah, which resulted in the striker suffering a bloodied nose.

Then, it is possible that Hoops midfielder Reo Hatate avoided a red card for a high tackle on Liam Donnelly in the engine room.

This latter matter was the subject of a conversation with Kris Boyd on Sky Sports, who, perhaps unsurprisingly, maintained that the Japanese international should have been dismissed.

Derek McInnes, Killie’s manager, was not entirely convinced, as he argued that the challenge was not executed with sufficient force, which could have been advantageous to Hatate.

However, Madden has now spoken out and disclosed that the 26-year-old was fortunate to avoid receiving a straight red card.

He believed that the challenge was deplorable and that VAR should have intervened to enhance the initial yellow card he was given.
