Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell delivers his verdict over $83 Million contract decision ahead of their week 2 NFL Season game

Prior to the Detroit Lions’ Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers, the former first-round pick and wide receiver Jameson Williams executed a three-year contract extension on Saturday evening. This agreement guarantees Williams’ participation in the 2029 NFL season.

Williams’ extension follows a career-best 2024 season in which he posted 58 receptions for 1,001 yards and seven receiving touchdowns, as well as 11 carries for 61 yards and one rushing score. He is the running companion of WR Amon-Ra St. Brown. Among receivers who participated in at least seven games, his 17.3 yards per catch ranked fourth in the NFL.

Williams’ annual average value (AAV) is $27.67 million, which ranks him 13th among all wide receivers. The contract is valued at up to $83 million.

On Wednesday, Detroit’s head coach, Dan Campbell, commented on the extension, stating, “It’s a positive development.” The extent to which you can eliminate the business aspect is advantageous. We had anticipated that it would be completed sooner; however, this is not always the case. I am pleased to have completed the task; Jamo has made significant progress, and we anticipate that he will continue to excel.

A Rude New Year’s Awakening
Detroit suffered a 27–13 defeat to the Packers at Lambeau Field to commence its season on Sunday. Williams concluded with four catches for 23 yards on five targets, while Jared Goff completed 31 of 39 passes for 225 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The lone touchdown was provided by rookie receiver Isaac TeSlaa on a leaping grab with 55 seconds remaining.

On Sunday, Detroit will host the Chicago Bears in a divisional matchup at Ford Field. The Bears are currently led by former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, while second-year quarterback Caleb Williams is at the helm.

Per ESPN BET, the Lions (-250) are favored by 5.5 points with a 47.5 over/under line. After a sluggish opener, many anticipate that the team will recoup offensively. ESPN’s matchup predictor assigns Detroit a 61.2% likelihood of success.
