According to a report by Ben Raven, the Detroit Lions have dismissed rookie EDGE Ahmed Hassanein as part of an injury settlement.
Boise State’s sixth-round draft choice in the 2025 NFL Draft, Hassanein, was considered a developmental pass-rusher with potential. Despite exhibiting glimpses of potential during training camp, he was ultimately unable to participate due to a pectoral injury, which resulted in the loss of valuable training repetitions. Dan Campbell, the team’s head coach, previously acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his recovery timeline, stating that the team was dubious as to whether he would return this season.
The injury situation of Hassanein was particularly challenging due to Detroit’s limited depth at the edge rusher position. The Lions were optimistic that their rookie could offer early rotational assistance, as Josh Paschal was also making progress in his recovery and Aidan Hutchinson was guiding the group. Consequently, his inaugural year is abruptly terminated prior to its commencement.
Hassanein is now free to sign with another club once he is healthy, as a result of the injury settlement. A potential reconciliation with Detroit in the future is not implausible, particularly if the Lions continue to pursue additional depth on the edge, provided that he clears waivers.
Hassanein’s NFL debut will be postponed for the time being, as the Lions are in the process of reducing their roster to a 53-man limit in order to meet the deadline on Tuesday.
