Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff opens up about how Detroit can build toward the Chiefs’ level of consistency and success.

The Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs don’t share a long-standing rivalry, but they’ve crossed paths a few times in recent years.

Back in 2019, the Chiefs edged out the Lions in a thrilling 34-30 victory — a game that marked the early rise of Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and what would soon become the Kansas City dynasty. At the time, Detroit were simply spectators to the Chiefs’ emergence as a powerhouse.

Fast forward to 2023, and the roles had started to shift. Coming off a strong finish to the 2022 campaign, the Lions were eager to prove they belonged among the NFL’s elite. Facing the reigning Super Bowl champions on opening night in Kansas City, Detroit made their statement with a hard-fought 21-20 upset win.

While the matchup between the two franchises has been limited, one thing has remained clear: over the past five years, the Chiefs have set the standard for success across the league. It’s a reality that Lions quarterback Jared Goff knows all too well.

When asked what separates Kansas City from the rest, Goff pointed to the team’s consistent ability to rebuild, stay hungry, and approach every season with the same drive and intensity — no matter how much success they’ve already achieved.
