Lions Could Target Veteran CB After Injury Blow in Browns Win
The Detroit Lions walked away from Sunday’s matchup with the Cleveland Browns with a convincing 34-10 victory, but the win came at a cost to their secondary.
Cornerback D.J. Reed suffered what head coach Dan Campbell suggested could be a long-term injury, while fellow defensive back Terrion Arnold also picked up a knock. With depth now a concern, Detroit may explore bringing in veteran help.
Campbell admitted Reed is unlikely to feature in the immediate future.
“I don’t know how long.
I cannot imagine [Reed] playing next week at a minimum until we get more tests done,” Campbell said. “And I don’t think [Arnold’s injury] is a major thing … but I don’t know about him next week either. It’s certainly not as significant as Reed.”
One name that could resurface is Asante Samuel Jr., who was linked to Detroit earlier this year.
The former Chargers corner has been sidelined with a back injury but is working toward an NFL return in the second half of the season. Christian Booher of SI.com suggested Samuel could be a strong fit, noting his veteran presence could mentor Detroit’s young secondary.
“Injuries limited Samuel last season, as he appeared in just four games. While the Lions do have some established options at the cornerback position, bringing in more depth wouldn’t hurt,” Booher wrote in August.
Despite the setbacks, Detroit’s defense stood tall against Cleveland. The Lions recorded three sacks, forced three turnovers, and scored on a 65-yard punt return by Kalif Raymond.
Safety Kerby Joseph also missed time with a knee issue, while edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson gave fans a scare before confirming he was fine.
“I just got the wind knocked out of me,” Hutchinson explained. “I couldn’t even breathe out there … Just give me 30 seconds and I’ll be good. And then we got up and we were good. We’re back.”
