The defender Harry Maguire from Manchester United will not be going to the European Championships with England’s 26-person team this summer.
Seven players were cut by Gareth Southgate from England’s team for the European Championships this summer. Harry Maguire says he is “devastated” to have been one of them.
The 31-year-old back hurt his calf and couldn’t play in United’s last four Premier League games or their FA Cup win over Manchester City.
Magure wrote on social media after it was announced that he wouldn’t be going to Germany with the Three Lions: “I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer.”
I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer.
Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it. Simply, I am absolutely gutted.

“No matter how hard I try, I haven’t been able to get over an injury to my calf.” It’s possible that I tried too hard to make it.
“To put it simply, I’m gutted. Being able to serve England is the greatest honor for me. It’s very important to me. I will cheer for the team as a fan, even if I can’t play for them. The whole country will too. Boys, go get it.”
Maguire talked about his plans for pre-season by saying, “Next, I will go back to working with the Manchester United medical team to get ready for next season.”
