“Difficult” – Newcastle United player Anthony Gordon delivers a clear verdict on the England performance vs Slovenia after their draw match (0-0) in the Euro 2024
Anthony Gordon, a player for Newcastle United and England, gave an honest review of England’s 0-0 draw with Slovenia on Tuesday at Euro 2024.
It was a good victory for England because they won their group and will go to the last sixteen, but Gareth Southgate’s team once again played poorly. Gordon didn’t play in England’s first two group games, but he came on as a late replacement in Cologne.
Even though he didn’t play for long, his deep cross set up one of England’s best chances of the game, but Cole Palmer’s shot was easily saved by Jan Oblak in the Slovenian goal.
When asked why he had stayed on the bench for most of the tournament so far because England had been having trouble in the closing third, Gordon said, “It’s frustrating because I want to play.”
“I believe every player here does.” You have a lot of good players, which makes it hard. But it’s hard to watch any game from the sidelines, no matter what level.
“You just want to play because you think you can make a difference.” When I came on, I thought I did. In the short time I had, I tried to be rude, get to people, and make trouble. I’ll always try to do that.
England hasn’t found out who they’ll be playing in the last 16 match on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen (5 p.m. start time). Either the Netherlands or the third-placed team from a group with Belgium, Romania, Slovakia, and Ukraine. All of these teams play at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Gordon also thinks that England will need to do “better” if they want to make it to the later rounds of the tournament.
“I think our goal was to make a statement and sort of make up for how we played in the last two games,” he said. “I still believe we’re there.” I believe we need to do better.
“I really believe we can do much better.” That is the issue. The guys we have are so good.
It’s so great to train with you every day. We’re good at everything. After that, it doesn’t click. It should happen in the next games, because we need to start really pressuring teams and taking over games.
“I think we’re really in charge of the games and keeping the ball well, but I think we’re missing that direct approach where we go after teams and cause problems.”
“And you can see that near the end of the game [against Slovenia], we made a great opportunity by going for it without worrying about losing the ball.”
Even though England won their group and moved on to the next round, fans and experts have been critical of them so far at Euro 2024.
Fans have been told to stick with the players by Gordon, but he knows why people are upset.
This 23-year-old said, “I told a few guys that the fans have been so great.” They didn’t really stop, but we’re not giving them many chances.”
Let me explain. I’m not going to tell you not to be angry because you want to watch good sports. It’s what everyone does. But please stay with us. Because getting the win is important.
