“Disappointment” – Rangers coach Philippe Clement delivers an anguish verdict on the match after Celtic F.C. Win vs Rangers (2-1)
Philippe Clement, the manager of Rangers, has been talking about what he thought about today’s 4–1 win over Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
The Bhoys won 2-1 thanks to an own goal by John Lundstram and a goal by Matt O’Riley. Soon after, Lundstram was sent off, which hurt Rangers’ hopes of getting the win they needed to stay in the title race.
Celtic now have six points more than anyone else in the league, and they only have two games left. There is already a trophy on Brendan Rodgers’ team, and next Saturday at Celtic Park is likely to be a prize day.
Clement wasn’t happy with what he saw from his team after the game. It seemed to him that they didn’t do what they were told in the days before the game.
Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland, he said, “Of course, it’s disappointing to lose.” We were not bold enough in the first 20 minutes, which made most people sad. And of course the bad call to hit and get a red card, which also changed the game.
“After 20 minutes, we had our chances, and we scored too.” At halftime, both teams are likely to reach the same number of goals. You have a different story if you stay with eleven.
“The players kept fighting and were tough enough to make it hard for Celtic to win the game.” Up until the very end, there was a lot of stress because my team kept fighting, which is what I expect of them. But I want the first 20 minutes to be better too. That’s something we need to do better.
“We spent a lot of time thinking about it over the last few days, so let’s talk about why we weren’t able to do that.”
Then Clement was asked about their chances of winning the title. He wouldn’t give up because they could still finish first theoretically, but he made it clear that he doesn’t think it’s likely.
Rangers needed this blow, and Celtic gave it to them. There have been times this season when the Ibrox team looked like they were really in the running for the title, but when it meant most, they fell short.
Rodgers’ team has won three of the four derbies against them this season and has not lost any. That kind of power will always have a huge effect on who wins the title. Celtic have done their best in big games.
