While Celtic fans wait for news about their own team’s transfers, the Parkhead club’s name has been linked to a big transfer story involving Liverpool and Newcastle.
When Newcastle United blocked Isak’s move to Liverpool for £110 million, he took a firm stand.
Since then, The Standard has said that Isak has told Newcastle that he will never play for them again. This made Jim White think of a story about a Celtic player from the late 1990s.
What the talkSPORT host said about Isak’s position with Newcastle made him think of a story about Pierre van Hooijdonk, an ex-Celtic striker who tried to get a move from Nottingham Forest.
And Isak should really pay attention to it.
Alexander Isak of Newcastle sent a warning about Pierre van Hooijdonk, a former Celtic star.
Fans of Celtic will always remember Pierre van Hooijdonk for scoring the goal that won them the Scottish Cup in 1996, ending a six-year title drought.
White did send the want-away Newcastle player a warning, though, because of what the big Dutchman did at Nottingham Forest.
It was White who asked talkSPORT, “Do you know something?” This made me remember something, and Isak needs to be careful.
“Because it made me remember, I believe it was 1997 or 1998” I had just been to Sky. Pierre van Hooijdonk used to play for Celtic and then for Nottingham Forest. He did well at Forest at first.
“He said that he had been told before that he could leave the club and that the owners had broken their promises to make the team stronger.”
“Forest played tough.” They wouldn’t let him be transferred again. But he went back to Holland and trained online with NEC Breda, telling them, “Tell me when this is all taken care of.”
“The club won the day because it wasn’t fixed.” He had to go back, and they asked him to play for them again. Not for long. He had to go back, though.
Jordan: “I think the situation has changed.” 27 years after that event, players have more power over their own lives.
White: “That’s a lot like what happened there, isn’t it?”
What happened to Pierre van Hooijdonk after he forced Celtic to leave?
Before leaving Celtic as a 90s star for Nottingham Forest, Van Hooijdonk got into a fight with Fergus McCann over a new deal.
After leaving Nottingham Forest, the Dutch striker went to Vitesse Arnhem in 1999 and then to Benfica in 2000.
Van Hooijdonk left Benfica to play for Feyenoord, where he stayed for two years and scored 52 goals, including two in the UEFA Cup final win over Borussia Dortmund in 2002. On the way to the final, Feyenoord beat Rangers.
After Feyenoord, Fenerbahçe called him in 2003, and he won back-to-back league wins there. In 2005, NAC Breda brought van Hooijdonk back to the Eredivisie, but he only stayed there for one season before moving back to Feyenoord in 2006.
When Van Hooijdonk left in 2007, he had won the English First Division, the Scottish Cup, the UEFA Cup, and the Turkish Super Lig.
