Done deal: Celtic reach agreement to sign star on deadline day

Celtic have agreed a verbal deal to sign Freiburg striker Junior Adamu, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.

The Scottish champions are closing in on their third addition of the January window, with the move for the 24-year-old Austria international expected to be wrapped up on Monday.

Adamu is thought to already be in Glasgow and looks set to join Julian Araujo and Tomas Cvancara in strengthening Martin O’Neill’s attacking options before the transfer deadline.

A number of clubs were said to be monitoring the forward and attempted to step in late, but Celtic appear to have won the race for the 24-year-old, who has scored twice in 18 outings this season.

Plettenberg reports that Celtic and Freiburg have now reached a verbal agreement over the late-window switch. Adamu moved to Freiburg in 2023 from Red Bull Salzburg and has netted seven goals in 67 appearances during his time in Germany.

He has started seven Europa League matches and seven Bundesliga games this campaign. Primarily a centre-forward, Adamu is also capable of operating in wide areas and has earned nine caps for Austria, most recently featuring in November 2024.

Celtic are still expected to complete at least two more signings before the deadline, with Lorient winger Joel Mvuka currently undergoing a medical in London ahead of a reported £3 million move.
