One of Manchester City’s most significant players is expected to depart the club during the summer. David Ornstein announced earlier this month that Txiki Begiristain will depart Man City in 2025, concluding his 13-year tenure as the club’s sporting director.

Begiristain has been involved in numerous transfer transactions that have seen a diverse array of players make their way to the Etihad Stadium during his tenure at the Manchester club, in addition to witnessing Pep Guardiola’s appointment as City’s manager in 2016. Subsequent to this significant announcement, new information has emerged concerning City’s search for a replacement for Begiristain.

Man City have reached an agreement to replace Txiki Begiristain with Hugo Viana. Journalist Jack Gaughan recently provided an update on City’s search for a new sporting director in a post that was uploaded to his official X account.

He stated, “Manchester City have reached an agreement to hire Hugo Viana from Sporting as their new sporting director, succeeding Txiki Begiristain.”

What date will Manchester City announce Viana’s appointment? Fabrizio Romano shared this post on his official X account following Gaughan’s update, which disclosed the date on which City will proclaim Viana’s appointment.

He stated, “Hugo Viana’s imminent appointment as the new director of football at Manchester City in 2025 will be announced following Txiki Begiristain’s departure.”

“The current director, Begiristain, will depart next year, and Man City intends to commemorate him as a critical component of the project for an extended period.”

After City’s interest in Viana was initially reported, Jornal de Noticias (via Sport Witness) alleged that the 41-year-old had previously declined offers to serve as their sporting director from Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

This indicates his high regard, as well as the fact that City has acted promptly to negotiate a contract for him in response to the announcement of Begiristain’s departure in the summer.

With an eye toward the summer, Viana may need to address the potential significant factor that Guardiola’s contract is scheduled to expire in June, provided that the 53-year-old has not signed an extension beforehand.
