Sheffield United Agree Deal to Sign Free Agent Jairo Riedewald
Sheffield United have reached an agreement to sign Dutch free agent Jairo Riedewald, according to reporter Mike McGrath, who confirmed the news on X.
After a dismal start to the season — with just one win and eight defeats — the Blades find themselves struggling near the foot of the table, even trailing crisis-hit rivals Sheffield Wednesday. It’s been a season to forget both on and off the pitch at Bramall Lane, but the return of club legend Chris Wilder offers a glimmer of hope for a turnaround.
With the transfer window closed, Wilder’s only option to bolster his depleted squad is to turn to the free-agent market. Reports earlier this week suggested that United were targeting Riedewald, who has been without a club since leaving Belgian side Royal Antwerp in the summer.
Now, McGrath has confirmed that an agreement has been reached, paving the way for the versatile Dutchman to join the squad.
What Riedewald Brings to the Blades
Sheffield United’s shortcomings this season have been well documented, with the lack of a true defensive midfielder standing out as a major issue. While Djibril Soumaré has shown promise, the team has struggled to replace the physical presence once provided by Vini Souza.
Riedewald’s arrival could help solve that problem. The 27-year-old offers valuable versatility, capable of playing as a defensive midfielder, centre-back, or left-back. With experience at Ajax and Crystal Palace, he brings both composure and top-level pedigree to Wilder’s setup.
His presence should add much-needed balance and protection to the Blades’ midfield, while also helping to steady a backline that has been under heavy pressure in recent weeks.
The Risks of a Mid-Season Free-Agent Signing
While Riedewald appears to be a smart acquisition, there are inherent risks in signing free agents during the season.
The Dutchman has reportedly been training with Sheffield United in recent weeks, allowing the coaching staff to assess his fitness and integration with the squad. However, players without a club often require time to regain full match sharpness — meaning Riedewald may need a gradual introduction into competitive action.
There’s also a risk of injury if he’s rushed back too quickly, so careful management will be key as Wilder looks to strengthen his side ahead of a crucial run of fixtures.
If Riedewald can hit the ground running, his arrival could prove a valuable boost in Sheffield United’s fight to turn their season around.
