Double transfer shock as Bristol City land Boro ace and race clear for young sensation

Bristol City head into the closing stages of the January window still firmly in the promotion mix, with the Robins determined to strengthen as they push for a play-off spot.

The Championship hopefuls remain just outside the top six and are aiming to sustain their challenge during a hectic run-in.

After reaching the play-offs for the first time in more than a decade under Liam Manning last season, new boss Gerhard Struber is targeting a similar achievement. Although the departure of key playmaker Anis Mehmeti to Ipswich Town in a £3m permanent deal was a setback, seventh-placed City sit only a point off the play-off places and believe their target remains well within reach.

Sam Morsy and George Earthy have already arrived this month, but further reinforcements are being explored behind the scenes. According to reports, Bristol City are set to secure Middlesbrough winger Delano Burgzorg on loan for the remainder of the season after an agreement was reached.

Burgzorg’s future at Boro had been uncertain, with earlier approaches reportedly knocked back, but the move now appears close.

The Dutch-born forward, formerly of Huddersfield Town, has made 71 appearances for Middlesbrough, though fewer than half were starts. Across his time in England, he has scored 14 goals in 100 Championship matches. His arrival would add another attacking option for Struber.

Elsewhere, City are also believed to be nearing a permanent deal for Manchester City defender Seb Naylor. The 20-year-old is viewed as a long-term prospect as the club continue to invest in youth.

Reports also suggest the Robins are leading the race to sign highly rated Irish teenager Billy O’Neill, despite interest from clubs across Europe.

The 17-year-old Bray Wanderers striker recorded 11 goals and 12 assists last season and played a key role in helping Ireland’s Under-17s qualify for the World Cup. Widely regarded as one of Ireland’s brightest young talents, he is out of contract later this year and could move to the UK once he turns 18.

City have additionally been linked with fellow Irish prospect Rhys Knight, brother of club captain Jason Knight, who also plays for Bray Wanderers.

A potential double swoop for the pair would underline Bristol City’s focus on blending immediate promotion ambition with long-term planning.
