Newcastle United F.C. team news: Eddie Howe facing big calls before FA Cup trip
Eddie Howe has some major selection decisions to make ahead of Newcastle United’s FA Cup fourth-round clash with Aston Villa F.C. at Villa Park.
Villa represent one of the toughest possible draws at this stage, and Newcastle return to the Midlands just weeks after suffering defeat to Unai Emery’s side in the Premier League.
Bruno Guimarães concern
The biggest worry surrounds captain Bruno Guimaraes, who limped off during Tuesday’s win over Tottenham Hotspur F.C.. His availability remains uncertain, meaning Howe may need to reshuffle his midfield.
In midweek, the Newcastle boss made bold attacking choices — leaving out Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade — and instead opting for a pace-driven front three of Harvey Barnes, Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon. That trio impressed and could be retained against Villa’s high defensive line.
Predicted Newcastle XI vs Aston Villa
Goalkeeper:
Aaron Ramsdale – After his penalty shootout heroics in the previous round against Bournemouth, he could be handed another cup start.
Defence:
Malick Thiaw – A goal in midweek highlighted his set-piece threat.
Sven Botman – Showing signs of returning to top form at a crucial stage.
Dan Burn – Likely to move centrally after featuring at left-back.
Lewis Hall – Rested midweek and expected to return refreshed.
Midfield:
Jacob Ramsey – In strong form and eager to impress against his former club.
Sandro Tonali – Could take on greater responsibility if Guimarães misses out.
Attack:
Anthony Elanga – His pace could exploit Villa’s aggressive back line.
Anthony Gordon – More cohesion in attack could provide him better service than in the previous meeting.
Harvey Barnes – Scored twice in the last FA Cup round and remains a major goal threat.
With a place in the fifth round at stake, Howe must balance momentum with caution. If Guimarães is ruled out, leadership and control in midfield will be key against a Villa side that have already shown they can hurt the Magpies this season.
