EFL release a strong statement on abandoned Blackburn vs Ipswich match clash and explains what will happen and gave reason why this drastic decision was made

The EFL has confirmed that Blackburn Rovers’ abandoned Championship meeting with Ipswich Town will be replayed in full — a decision that has left the Lancashire side furious after losing what they felt was a deserved victory.

The match was halted in the 79th minute at Ewood Park with Rovers 1-0 ahead against ten-man Ipswich, thanks to Todd Cantwell’s penalty, before torrential rain rendered the pitch unplayable. Despite holding a strong advantage, the EFL Board ruled by majority that the game must be restarted from scratch.

Blackburn criticised the outcome, insisting it ignored the momentum they held at the time of abandonment. The club released a statement expressing its “extreme disappointment” and confirmed it is weighing up an appeal.

The EFL defended its stance, saying it had reviewed all possibilities and followed precedent for abandoned fixtures to “protect the integrity of the competition.”

A rearranged date for the replay will be confirmed soon. Ipswich, who had Jacob Greaves sent off before the abandonment, will look to use the reset as an opportunity to regroup, while Blackburn must quickly turn focus back to their upcoming Championship matches.
