Eight Newcastle United players could leave next summer as contracts run down
Several Newcastle United players are approaching the end of their contracts at St. James’ Park, with the club already looking ahead to strengthening their squad amid a slow start to the Premier League season.
The Magpies sit 14th in the table after back-to-back defeats in London to West Ham and Brentford, earning just 12 points from 11 games, with three wins and five losses.
This underwhelming return is particularly disappointing given Newcastle’s summer signings, including Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa, Anthony Elanga, and Malick Thiaw, alongside the departure of star striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool. Many players will now be playing for their futures as Newcastle aim to build on last season’s EFL Cup triumph and Champions League qualification.
Who could leave Newcastle United for free next summer?
Contracts or loans ending next year put several first-team stars in the spotlight. According to Transfermarkt, eight players are confirmed to be nearing the end of their deals:
-
Kieran Trippier (full-back)
-
Fabian Schar (centre-back)
-
Mark Gillespie (goalkeeper)
-
Jamaal Lascelles (centre-back)
-
Emil Krafth (full-back)
-
Nick Pope (goalkeeper)
-
Aaron Ramsdale (goalkeeper, loan)
-
Max Thompson (goalkeeper)
Notably, this list includes key figures like Nick Pope, Aaron Ramsdale, and Fabian Schar, who have been regular contributors to Eddie Howe’s squad. Additionally, players such as John Ruddy and Harrison Ashby reportedly have one year remaining on their contracts, while decisions on veteran defender Dan Burn, as well as Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock, and Sven Botman, will become critical heading into 2027.
What’s next for Newcastle United?
Newcastle’s recent defeats could be costly, especially as they prepare to host second-placed Manchester City after the international break. Pep Guardiola’s side are in strong form, winning their last four matches across competitions, including league victories over Bournemouth (3-1) and Liverpool (3-0).
Following that, Newcastle travel to Everton before hosting Tottenham and relegation-threatened Burnley, ahead of the first Tyne-Wear derby in the league since 2016 at the Stadium of Light. They also face challenging Champions League fixtures away at Marseille and Bayer Leverkusen, making squad decisions all the more critical in the months ahead.
