Emmanuel Fernandez move: Rangers accept unusual term in Ibrox Stadium switch

Rangers agreed to include a rare goal-based clause in their deal to sign defender Emmanuel Fernandez from Peterborough United.

According to journalist Chris Jack, the centre-back’s £3 million move to Ibrox last summer came with several add-ons, including a sell-on fee and an unusual clause linked to goals scored—something rarely attached to a defender. Fernandez, who previously played in non-league before impressing in League One, signed a four-year deal with an option for an additional year.

Peterborough’s confidence in the 24-year-old’s attacking ability is reflected in the clause, with sporting director Barry Fryeven suggesting the player could one day be worth up to £40 million. That optimism doesn’t seem misplaced, as Fernandez has already netted five goals in 20 Scottish Premiership appearances and six in 26 games overall this season.

The defender, who has also earned his first call-up to the Nigeria national team, could potentially reach double figures as Rangers continue their push for the title.

Despite strong away form, dropped points against sides like Motherwell, Livingston and Celtic have hurt their chances. However, recent results mean Rangers remain within touching distance of the top, currently chasing Heart of Midlothian.

With crucial home fixtures against Aberdeen and Dundee United coming up, Rangers know they must avoid further slip-ups to stay in the title race.

Meanwhile, Fernandez’s rising value suggests he may not see out his full contract, though he is expected to remain at Ibrox until at least 2027. After limited opportunities under former boss Russell Martin, he has become a key figure under current manager Danny Rohl.
