England coach Gareth Southgate reveals the hidden reason why he selected Manchester City player Phil Foden in the squad for England Euro 2024
Phil Foden, a star player for Manchester City, has been playing great this season and was named Premier League Player of the Season for it.
Gareth Southgate didn’t say for sure that Phil Foden would play at number ten for England this summer, but he doesn’t care where the Manchester City star plays.
Foden had an amazing season. On the last day, he scored two great goals to help City win the Premier League title. He had already been named Player of the Season and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year. His best games have been when he was in the number ten spot, but he has spent most of the season out wide and moving inside as a second number ten.
Foden has become a stronger favorite to start for England at this summer’s European Championship with each passing game. Southgate has refused to play him in the middle of the field until he plays there often for City, but even that might not be enough to win a spot at number ten.
“Phil has played on the left, the right, or in the middle.” “Where Phil ends up is more important than where he starts,” Southgate said.
“He sometimes stays wide when he starts on the left for City, and sometimes he is let to drift.” Then it’s up to you to protect yourself. Jude Bellingham has played as a ten, but for Real Madrid he also protects on the left wing sometimes.
“That’s not how we work; we never tie our players to the corner.” That freedom is there. It’s clear that Phil has been very smart. You want him in those middle spots. To make that happen, we need to find the best way to do it.
Foden is one of four City players named to the England team. The other three are Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Jack Grealish. James Trafford and Cole Palmer, who both graduated from the academy, are also there. However, Rico Lewis and Kalvin Phillips are not allowed to play in the event this summer.
