English 47-year-old football manager Frank Lampard reveals the “key factor” behind Coventry City’s impressive early-season form and why there are topping the league table

Coventry City update from CoventryLive — Frank Lampard has highlighted the key factor driving the Sky Blues’ sensational start to the season.

Coventry City’s explosive attacking form has become one of the biggest talking points in the Championship. Lampard’s side have now netted an impressive 29 goals from their opening ten league fixtures after another strong showing at the weekend.

Three of the league’s top four scorers play for the Sky Blues — Haji Wright leads the pack with eight goals (11 in all competitions), followed closely by Victor Torp and Brandon Thomas-Asante, who each have six, alongside Hull’s Oliver McBurnie.

While most of the attention has understandably centred on Coventry’s dynamic attack, it’s their defensive solidity that has provided the foundation for their success. Even with star playmaker Jack Rudoni — who scored ten last season — sidelined for the past four matches, City have recorded four straight victories, scoring 14 goals through six different players.

Behind that run has been a consistent back line of Milan van Ewijk, Bobby Thomas, Liam Kitching, and Jay Dasilva, supported by goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. Together, they’ve secured five consecutive clean sheets.

Speaking about that defensive stability, Lampard said:

“It’s massively important — the consistency in selection gives confidence to the rest of the team. Having that settled unit helps build partnerships and understanding.”

The manager also praised Rushworth’s development, adding:

“Rushy has really grown into the role. He’s adapting well to the environment and performing at a level beyond expectations. He’s a really talented goalkeeper.”

Lampard further explained that the coaching staff have been working hard to maintain defensive cohesion:

“We spend a lot of time ensuring the back four stay connected. We want our line high, but we also have to know when to drop. It’s all about small details, and the players are fully engaged — even those not currently in the starting XI.”

He also praised the depth and competition in his squad:

“Luke Woolfenden’s been training brilliantly, but the lads in the team right now deserve to keep their places. That competition is healthy and drives everyone on. Clean sheets come from collective effort, and that grit is what strong teams are built on.”
