Morgan didn’t like how Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta handled the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who used to be captain.
After a big fight with Arteta, the scorer left Arsenal in a very bad way during the January 2022 transfer window. At the time, Arteta was under a lot of pressure because his team had finished eighth in the Premier League twice in a row.
Aubameyang was an important player for Arsenal during those tough seasons, hitting 32 goals in 65 Premier League games. But he had problems with discipline, like being late for the 2021 North London game against Tottenham Hotspur and coming back late from a trip abroad to see his sick mother, so Arteta took away his captaincy. After a little more than a month, Aubameyang’s contract ended, and he went to Barcelona.
Over the last three years, since Aubameyang left, Arsenal has finished fifth in the Premier League once and second twice. Even though the team got better, Morgan didn’t agree with how the situation with Aubameyang was handled. Morgan was a harsh critic of Arteta in his early years at the Emirates Stadium.
From what I heard from people inside the club, Piers Morgan’s main problem with Aubameyang was that he was bad at keeping time. “I didn’t agree with it because I liked Aubameyang,” Morgan said on the Up Front with Simon Jordan podcast.
“So I thought, ‘Don’t make him captain, then.'” Even though he got to the North London match a little late, he was still dropped, benched, or something similar, and it was clear that the older player wasn’t getting along with the new coach very well.
It was emphasized by Piers Morgan that Arsenal needs a scorer like Aubameyang right now. “It’s too bad, because we really need a striker like Aubameyang right now.” “Arteta now has to fix the one missing part of the wheel,” he said.
“I think back to the most important games this season, like the home loss to Aston Villa and the home and away losses to Bayern Munich. Those games made me think, ‘If you had a proper striker, there were so many chances to win.'”
Aubameyang recently talked about his fight with Arteta. He has scored 30 goals and set up 11 others in 50 games for Marseille this season, showing that he has gotten back to scoring goals. In an interview with Colinterview, he talked about a key chat he had with Arteta that made their relationship worse.
“When I got there, the coach was done with his meeting. He then grabbed me and beat me badly. He yelled at me like I was crazy and said, ‘You put a knife in my back!'” “Given the times we’re living in, you can’t do that to me,” Aubameyang said.
“I tell myself right then that I’m not going to answer him because it will end badly.” I didn’t go out to a party. He knows very well why I’m leaving, so I don’t understand why he’s addressing me in this way here.
Aubameyang went on to talk about what happened next: “When I get home, the doctor calls me and says, ‘Tomorrow, the coach doesn’t want you to be there.'” For the next match, I knew it would be a mess, and I thought to myself, “Damn, everyone is going to talk about it again. What is this crazy thing?” It was hard for me to understand.
