Newcastle United
English commentators Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher sent out a brutal message to Newcastle United after Eddie Howe’s disappointment to sign Marc Guehi this summer
Before the Tottenham game, Neville and Carragher talked about what was going on at Newcastle United. Both Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were worried about the team after Eddie Howe looked clearly upset on Sky Sports Super Sunday.
When asked about the summer transfer window, the Toon manager didn’t try to hide how disappointed he was that the Magpies didn’t get Marc Guehi. Fans of the black and white team are worried about the lack of new signings. PSR has been cited many times this summer as the reason why Newcastle has had to be careful.
Neville would say that the current PSR rules make it hard for the Magpies to add players to improve the team, and he would ask the Premier League to change these rules. Even though Carragher didn’t disagree, he told Newcastle’s leaders that they should do everything they can to keep Howe at the club, since he is still being linked to the open Three Lions job.
Gary Neville: “I think what they’ve done in the first couple of years is really set themselves up well, and they’ve been watched.” To be fair, I think we’ve all said that things have gone really well. We thought they would be flashy and maybe a little strange when they got there. We know what Chelsea did with all that cash.
Newcastle has been checked out, and I believe they’ve done a great job. It sounds like Eddie is upset about what’s happened in the last few months based on what I heard him say in the conversation. I really don’t think you need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that he should be upset. After losing those stars, they should have brought in better ones. Now it seems to be at the point of no return that was always going to happen after a few years. What’s next?
“Then how do you take it to the next level?” What can you do to help Eddie Howe get where he needs to go? We’re about to start a very difficult period of time?”
Jones: “Are they actually weaker than last season in some respects Jamie?”
Jamie Carragher: “It’s pretty much the same.” They’ll say that they haven’t lost any important stars. You remember them coming in and trying to get the biggest prizes. In a way, I feel bad for Newcastle because this money almost came at the wrong time. With the new Financial Fair Play rules, it doesn’t matter how much money you have; what matters is how much you bring into the club. They are trying to get more sponsors to help with that.
“To be honest, they might have to sell one of their best players for £100 million to £120 million and start over.” To keep getting better players at lower prices, like they did with Guimaraes, Isak, and Gordon, they might have to do that for two or three years before they can make enough money to do so.
“Northampton didn’t bother me.” Let’s talk about how they got all the prizes and money. I don’t think you can do that right now. You can fight about the rules and how they’re set up, but I think a bigger problem for them is that if they lose today, there will be a lot of bad feelings going into the international break. A lot of pressure is being put on both CEO Darren Eales and sporting director Paul Mitchell by fans. They must be very careful not to lose Eddie Howe.
“I think most people think Eddie Howe is the best person for the England job.” He’s going to go work for England if he’s not happy here. “He will.”
Roy Keane: “It’s clear they’ve had a few good years, and you can also tell by the way the manager is standing.” Even though they didn’t play their best in the first two games, they’ll be happy with the four points they earned. But you can quickly lose fans’ interest and progress. If things are going well, that’s fine, but if things go badly, they’ll start to question the board and the people who are making the choices, and things can go badly very quickly.
Gary Neville: “This has a few things in it.” I believe that this is one of the strangest transfer windows ever, and I believe that PSR is being used by the Premier League. This is why many teams, including Manchester United, are having to sell players they might not want to. It wasn’t meant for PSR to force clubs to sell their best school players, but that’s what we’re seeing.
“Something very important needs to change about the rules in the next 12 months.” New Haven I believe they should be able to put money into the team. Once more, the PSR needs to be changed so that owners can put money into the team so Newcastle can reach the same level as Manchester City and other sides. We can’t just tell clubs “you’re not going to invest” and walk away.
“We need to do it with safety and long-term viability in mind.” That means the owner may have to pay for it all at once. When it comes to Newcastle, we can’t hold them back, but we are right now.
