English football analyst Jamie Carragher shares his reason how he got it wrong with his assessment about the Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk while he was at Celtic F.C
Virgil van Dijk departed Celtic for Southampton in 2015 prior to his substantial £75 million transfer to Liverpool.
The substantial Dutch defender achieved two league titles and a League Cup at Celtic, in addition to making a significant impression on the continent in the Champions League.
Southampton made Van Dijk one of Celtic’s most expensive transfer transactions at £11.5m, after he made 115 appearances and scored 15 goals.
However, two and a half seasons later, van Dijk transferred to Liverpool for £75 million. On the other hand, Jamie Carragher recalls him from his time at Celtic. In this context, he appears to imply that his initial impression of the Champions League winner was unfounded.
People were unwilling to take a risk on Virgil van Dijk at Celtic, according to Jamie Carragher.
Carragher is a Liverpool legend and is a fervent supporter of van Dijk at Anfield. However, when he was at Celtic, the Sky Sports pundit confessed that he was not particularly impressed, as he seemed to imply that he had made a mistake.
Carragher stated in an interview with Stick to Football, “I recall attending a Champions League match between Celtic and Ajax in 2013/14.”
“I was not particularly well-informed about van Dijk.” Additionally, I believe that Steve Bruce may have served as the manager of Hull or an individual in close proximity to them. Van Dijk was observed by a small number of individuals, and I observed him during the game.
“I will not sit here and remark, ‘They should have signed him.'” At that moment, he appeared to be exceedingly large. Know you what I am referring to?
“Consequently, you are contemplating whether or not he is capable of moving.” Because he nearly executed that suave and slow-motion performance.
“And teams were observing him, and it was evident that they were hesitant to take a risk.”
Virgil van Dijk’s career appearances, which include victories at Celtic and Liverpool, are comprehensive.
Van Dijk is widely considered the world’s finest central defender as a result of his numerous accomplishments for both his club and his country.
