Mike Phelan, a former assistant coach at Manchester United, has expressed his agreement with Cristiano Ronaldo’s prior critiques of the Carrington training center. Phelan has acknowledged that there are, in fact, “issues” at the facility.
During his participation on the Ben Heath podcast, Phelan was questioned about his thoughts on the training ground that United uses. This came about as a result of Ronaldo’s contentious criticism of the complex, which he expressed in an interview with Piers Morgan in the year 2022. Ex-United coach Phelan discussed the current status of Carrington in an open and honest manner, admitting that it needs some “brightening up.”
It is true, Phelan admitted, that there are problems. “We all have houses, and if we don’t paint them frequently enough or if we don’t do the pointing on the walls, then it starts to corrode a little bit, so I believe that there was an element of that,” she said. The only thing that needed to be done was to spruce it up and make it look more appealing when I returned. Everything was already there.
After Sir Alex Ferguson left United in 2021, Ronaldo, who had two stints at the club, first from 2003 to 2009 and then returning in 2021, highlighted his dissatisfaction with the team’s lack of growth since the departure of Ferguson. “I don’t know what’s going on but since Sir Alex Ferguson left, I saw no evolution in the club, the progress was zero,” he remarked in an honest conversation with Piers Morgan in November 2022, just before his contract was terminated. “I don’t know what’s going on.” There were no changes. “Not only the health club, the jacuzzi, and the swimming pool… Including certain aspects, such as the technology, the kitchen, and the chefs, who are, as far as I am concerned, wonderful people. Phelan, who acknowledged Ronaldo’s remarks, made the suggestion that the high standards that players’ personal facilities establish could be impacting the expectations that players have of the club’s training fields.
“I think Cristiano realised as well, and you have to understand that all these players in the Premier League, they have these facilities at home, it’s amazing really,” Phelan explained to reporters. The kitchens that they have are more expensive than my own home, and they have chefs on staff.
“Not only do they have saunas, gyms, and pools, but they also have gardens that are three or four acres in size, and they have established football fields within those gardens.” It is something that you see on television all the time, and it is just incredible. If they are able to afford to do that, then their standard of life is extremely high, and they anticipate that when they come to work. You are obligated to give that for them and improve your performance in this area.
When it comes to competition, the former manager of Hull City admitted that the Red Devils need to keep up with their competitors in terms of standards. “I’m not saying it’s got to be bigger, bigger and bigger because sometimes small is beautiful you know,” said Phelan in conclusion. However, there are now expectations inside Premier League football teams regarding the quality and standard that you are expected to fulfill.

It has been reported that Brailsford, the sporting director of Ineos, who joined the board after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority buyout in February, is of the opinion that Carrington is not up to par. Additionally, earlier this year, it was rumored that United was discussing the possibility of moving their training base to a new location.
