English football manager Jason Tindall explains why Newcastle United have signed an extraordinary player this summer
Jason Tindall was undoubtedly influenced by Newcastle United striker William Osula.
William Osula was understandably still smiling long after the final whistle on Saturday, despite the fact that his debut goal was not scored due to a tight offside decision. In the same way that Newcastle United’s 1-0 friendly victory over Brest provided Osula with a sample of life at St James’ Park, the newcomer provided supporters with a glimpse of the raw attributes that have long captivated the Magpies’ coaching team: the work rate, the physical stature, and the rapid pace.
That will not have been a surprise to those who have been monitoring Osula’s development from the touchline, as they have been following his progress since assistant Jason Tindall’s brief stint working alongside Paul Heckingbottom at Sheffield United. Heckingbottom stated that Tindall “knows all about Osula” and “always asks” about him. Additionally, the former Sheffield United manager “spoke to those guys” at Newcastle prior to the black-and-whites’ acquisition. It is evident that this striker possesses an extraordinary amount of potential.
“Will has got moments in him, which are really exciting, where you can’t play him because he’s got pace and power,” he indicated to ChronicleLive. “He can move in the opposite direction if he squares the defender up.” Left foot is stepped over, followed by right foot, and the sound of an explosion is heard.
Newcastle’s acquisition of him is likely due to their recognition of his potential. He is still a work in progress, and he has the potential to improve physically. He is in no way prepared to assume the role of line leader from the outset and contribute a significant number of minutes to the team.
“That game intelligence that enables you to contribute for 90 minutes, rather than merely being on the pitch in the hopes of generating that moment of magic, is likely the only aspect that Will is currently lacking.”
“Listen, Newcastle is aware of this.” This is recognized by them. They are aware of the areas in which he needs to develop and will be collaborating with him. Occasionally, it is simply a matter of time. They are aware that they are purchasing a project and a collaborator.
The term is “project.” Anton Robinson, who served as a recruitment consultant during Eddie Howe’s tenure at Bournemouth, previously disclosed to ChronicleLive that the Newcastle manager and his staff would endeavor to be “slightly ahead of the curve” in their evaluation of players who “might not be hitting the stats that you want, but there might be a reason behind that if you can think outside the box.” Osula serves as case in point.
Despite the fact that Sheffield United was relegated last season, Osula was unable to score a single league goal. In 21 appearances, the striker was restricted to an average of 37 minutes on the field and managed to make only nine top-flight starts. He was unable to derive much inspiration from his time with the Premier League’s lowest scorers, as no team in the division produced fewer crosses (428), completed fewer passes (12,218), or had fewer shots (365) and shots on target (129). Additionally, the Blades were frequently compelled to come from behind due to their division’s most vulnerable defense.
It is rather telling that the idea of Osula staying with Sheffield United on loan was not discussed, as Newcastle’s coaching staff wanted to work with the 20-year-old right away and give him the chance to learn from both Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson in the coming weeks and months. This provides a little context. Osula has already mentioned that Howe has the ability to “polish” him, and this is a player who is keen to learn, as Heckingbottom explained.
“Will is one of those lads that would stay out with us,” according to him. “He would be the first to enter and the last to exit the training ground.” He would return in the afternoon and undoubtedly dedicate the necessary hours. However, the challenge lies in the transition to the pitch. What is the purpose of these sessions and the learning process?
“He possesses the necessary athleticism and speed.” He was born with that, and there is still more to emerge from him in terms of his physical capabilities. He is still twenty years old. He still has a considerable distance to travel.
“He is aware that he is capable of competing in specific areas.” He is aware that, in terms of his physical capabilities, he is not in over his head. He is aware that he has the ability to generate moments; however, he must also demonstrate the consistency with which he will maintain the ball and comprehend his role in the absence of the ball, as this will enable him to secure victories for the manager and the team.
There is a precedent for a transaction of this nature. After two years of monitoring Aaron Ramsdale during his tenure at Sheffield United, Andy Howe, Newcastle’s assistant head of recruitment, toured the training ground with Osula on his first day. Bournemouth acquired the shot-stopper for a mere £800,000 in 2017, after observing his management of the transition to the first team. The striker’s top-flight experience and potential were reflected in his £10m price tag, which could potentially increase to £15m. However, Newcastle’s staff observed the Dane for three years, and there are one or two similarities.
Heckingbottom further stated, “They are aware of their actions.” “They possess an advantageous infrastructure.” Jason had a limited acquaintance with Will in terms of his potential as a watchful individual. Andy Howe will have already been monitoring him. They will have had an abundance of opportunities.
“They have no issues with him.” He is exceptional as a young man. He is a member of a delightful family. He is eager to succeed. He possesses all of the aforementioned. They are not considering any issues.
