Sheffield Wednesday Searching for New Ownership After Entering Administration
Sheffield Wednesday are now officially on the hunt for new ownership after being placed into administration, marking yet another low point in what has been a turbulent 2025 for the club.
The financial chaos under Dejphon Chansiri has left the Owls in disarray, with unpaid wages in five of the last seven months prompting key players like Michael Smith and Josh Windass to leave on free transfers — both strengthening rival Championship sides Preston North End and Wrexham.
The club’s financial struggles have led to five EFL-imposed embargoes, restricting their recruitment to loan signings such as Ethan Horvath and Harry Amass. Combined with the automatic 12-point deduction for entering administration, the challenge of survival in the Championship looks steep for Henrik Pedersen’s team.
Despite the uncertainty, there’s a glimmer of hope for the Steel City side as fresh ownership interest begins to emerge.
U.S. Billionaire Linked With Takeover Bid
American businessman John McEvoy has reportedly expressed interest in purchasing the club, sparking optimism among Wednesday fans eager for a fresh start. McEvoy, who is based in California, is a minority shareholder in both the Colorado Rockies (MLB) and Nashville Predators (NHL), and also holds shares in the talent agency Various Artists, whose roster includes Sheffield’s own Reverend and the Makers.
Frontman Jon McClure, a lifelong Wednesday supporter, is said to have been consulted in early talks regarding the potential takeover.
With administrators now managing daily operations, any new negotiations are expected to move more smoothly — free from Chansiri’s often difficult involvement.
Lee Hendrie’s Take on McEvoy’s Interest
Speaking to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie shared his optimism about McEvoy’s reported interest:
“Hopefully this marks a real turning point for Sheffield Wednesday,” Hendrie said. “It’s going to be a tough season with the points deduction, but if they can bring in someone who truly cares about the club and wants to invest, it’s brilliant news.
The fans have been incredible throughout this ordeal — they deserve some positivity and a future they can look forward to.”
As excitement builds, the club must remain cautious. After years of instability, Wednesday can’t afford another unsuitable owner. The selection process for the club’s next custodian needs to be meticulous — ensuring the next chapter is one of growth, stability, and renewed pride at Hillsborough.
