Paul Scholes was one of the people who wanted Kobbie Mainoo to start for England against Slovenia. He made his point after the young player came off the bench and played for 45 minutes.

After seeing Kobbie Mainoo get his chance against Slovenia on Tuesday, former England player Paul Scholes seemed more upbeat about the Three Lions.

Gareth Southgate’s team didn’t have many good chances in their last group game, which ended in a goalless draw in Cologne after a goal in the first half was called offside. Even so, they won the group because the other game between Denmark and Serbia ended in a tie.

Mainoo, a young starlet for Manchester United, had only played four minutes in the first two games of the group, coming on late against Serbia. On Tuesday, though, he got more playing time when he replaced Conor Gallagher at halftime, which made Scholes very happy.

“If Kobbie Mainoo came in, all of a sudden you have control, you have a player who makes your team play football,” Scholes said in a TNT Sports interview before the game to support Mainoo.

Scholes shared a picture of Mainoo to make his feelings clear after the game against Denmark, where the young player stayed on the bench. He did say, though, that England were closer to their best XI after Tuesday’s game, even though they lost.

“Could surprise some…” very proud of that effort… the right players were on the field at the right time at some point during that game… I believe this group is ready to work together. Schönes wrote on Instagram, “Night.”

Scholes has been playing the drum for Mainoo since the beginning of the event. Even though the commentator didn’t play his first game for England until he was 22, he was already impressed by what he saw from Mainoo when he was much younger.

“Read some things last week that said I was like this kid… Scholes wrote after Mainoo played great in the FA Cup final, “Don’t waste your time; he is 10 times the player I was when I was 19.” “I love how calm he is when he receives the ball and how aware he is of what’s going on around him. Plus, he scores big goals in big games.” The boy is unique… Also, he’s a f***ing Red [two love emojis]. See you later.”

Because England came in third place in their group, they will play their round of 16 game on Sunday, but they don’t know who they will be playing yet. They could play either the Netherlands, who lost to Austria on Tuesday and finished third in their group, or a team from Groups E or F.

Not only did Mainoo do well as a substitute, but Chelsea star Cole Palmer also played his first minutes of the game and did a great job. There has been a lot of calls for both to start, and England’s general showing has made pundit Ian Wright angry.

When ITV showed the game, Wright said, “We look really basic, honestly, we look really basic.” “It makes me sad because I believe we are better than that. I believe that both the players on the field and the guys on the bench are better.
