English Premier League officially released a strong statement on why it was right to award a penalty kick after David Raya tackled Evanilson during Arsenal vs. Bournemouth

Arsenal’s defeat relegates them to third place in the Premier League table, and they have forfeited the opportunity to surpass Liverpool, who are playing Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

After William Saliba was dismissed in the 30th minute for a challenge on Bournemouth striker Evanilson, Arsenal was compelled to play the majority of the game with only 10 players.

In the 77th minute, Bournemouth was awarded a penalty kick after David Raya tackled Evanilson on the outskirts of the penalty area. The decision was promptly verified by VAR after referee Rob Jones pointed to the spot. Jones also issued Raya a yellow card.Subsequently, the Premier League issued a statement on X, which was previously known as Twitter, through its PL Match Centre account to provide an explanation for the penalty that was awarded.

The spot-kick was awarded after the contact between Raya and Evanilson during the challenge was deemed “sufficient” to warrant the penalty. This was affirmed.

The statement read, “Raya committed a foul on Evanilson, resulting in a penalty awarded by the referee.” “The VAR checked and confirmed the refereeā€™s call, deeming that contact was sufficient for a penalty.”

Raya was not issued a red card for his challenge on Evanlison, despite conceding a penalty, as a result of the double jeopardy regulation in the Premier League.

According to the law: “Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off.”

In recent seasons, the “double jeopardy” rule has been implemented to prohibit the same offense from being penalized with a penalty and a dismissal. Nevertheless, Saliba’s red card necessitates a one-game suspension in the Premier League, commencing with the match against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium next weekend.
