Ex-Celtic and Newcastle United player discloses that he received a call from a “major club in England” regarding a potential transfer following his unexpected success.

A former player associated with Celtic and Newcastle United has disclosed that he declined the opportunity to engage in discussions regarding a potential return to English football.

Damien Duff experienced a career at the top of the game as a player. His professional career commenced at Blackburn Rovers, subsequently leading to a significant transfer to Chelsea, after which he spent time at Newcastle United.

Duff dedicated three years to Newcastle prior to transferring to Fulham, followed by stints at Melbourne City and Shamrock Rovers before the conclusion of his career.Since his retirement, he has transitioned into coaching, accumulating experience with Celtic. He joined the organisation in 2019 in a capacity focused on the reserve squad before advancing to the first team.

Subsequently, he assumed a position within the Republic of Ireland framework, with Shelbourne marking his inaugural managerial appointment in 2021.He continues to hold his position and, in the previous season, led the club to an unexpected championship triumph in the League of Ireland, marking their first title in 18 years.

This has generated considerable interest in his services, and the former Celtic and Newcastle United player has disclosed that he has received enquiries from an English club regarding a potential transfer, facilitated by his assistant, Joey O’Brien.

Duff remains steadfast in his position. He stated to the Irish Sun, “I have had a few.” Joey rang me last week, a major club in England rang to see if I was interested and we didn’t even have the conversation.

We have recently returned to Shels. I believe that this demonstrates my interest. Negative. Anyone is welcome to contact me. I am not merely expressing this sentiment for the sake of appearance or to convey the notion that “he is a commendable individual.”

“No, I sincerely wish to remain here.” I find myself in the company of exceptionally talented individuals. Am I consistently exhibiting crankiness on a daily basis? Indeed, that does not imply that my affection for them is diminished. I do not have any intentions of travelling anywhere, whether you choose to believe it or not. I am fortunate to have a lovely wife and children; my daughter is currently in the sixth grade.

I have advocated for the league and shall persist in my efforts, driven by a profound passion for its development and expansion. I firmly contend that it represents the most inspiring development in Irish football at present, significantly surpassing our national team. Furthermore, I have no intentions of departing from this endeavour. “You will be required to tolerate my presence for the foreseeable future.”
