Ex-Rangers hero Barry Ferguson has admitted he’s anxious about Celtic’s next managerial pick, revealing whether Martin O’Neill or Wilfried Nancy strikes more fear into him

Glasgow has seen some wild football seasons, but nothing quite like this one.

Both Celtic and Rangers have changed managers — something that has never happened at the same time — and Hearts have surprisingly taken control at the top of the Premiership table.

With Wilfried Nancy expected to be confirmed as Celtic’s new boss soon, fans are simply waiting for the official announcement.

But Barry Ferguson insists Celtic would be even more dangerous if they kept Martin O’Neill instead of appointing Nancy.

O’Neill hasn’t just calmed things down at Celtic; he’s revived the entire team. The energy, the confidence, and the style of play have all lifted under the 73-year-old, who is now the oldest active coach in Britain. Despite his age, Ferguson believes O’Neill should remain the permanent manager.

Speaking on Go Radio, the former Rangers captain admitted that, from a Rangers point of view, O’Neill staying on would worry him more than Nancy taking over.

With his Rangers mindset on, Ferguson didn’t hide his thoughts about Celtic’s managerial situation. He acknowledged that Thierry Henry has been full of praise for Nancy, calling him a “top coach and top manager.” But Ferguson stressed that managing Celtic is a completely different challenge.

And you can see why he feels that way. Even though O’Neill’s best years as a manager may be behind him, he still guided Celtic to a win over Rangers at Hampden. On top of that, Celtic have been perfect in domestic matches during his short return and are now pushing right behind Hearts, especially after Hearts finally suffered their first league defeat of the season at Aberdeen.

Ferguson summed it up simply:

“Look at Celtic and the difference Martin O’Neill has made in such a short time. People talk about him being 73, but not keeping him until the end of the season? If I were Celtic, I would seriously have to consider that.”
