Eddie Howe Speaks Out on Kieran Trippier’s Future at Newcastle

Kieran Trippier is set to return to Newcastle United’s starting XI in the Champions League this week as the Magpies prepare to face Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday evening.

The 35-year-old hasn’t started since the 2-1 defeat to Barcelona in Europe, instead featuring from the bench in recent games against Bradford City and Arsenal. Trippier has been a pivotal figure for Newcastle since arriving from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, making 130 appearances, helping the club qualify for the Champions League, and lifting the Carabao Cup last season.

Despite his influence, speculation around his future has persisted. Newcastle rejected a £13 million bid from Bayern Munich in January 2024, while Trippier has also attracted interest from Saudi Arabia and held informal talks with AS Monaco last summer.

With Tino Livramento’s emergence, Trippier’s role has shifted from automatic starter to experienced squad option. Newcastle now face a decision on whether to extend his contract, with his current deal running down.
Asked about the situation, head coach Eddie Howe said:

“Kieran’s a very experienced and very important player for us. His contract length is something I’m sure the incoming sporting director will look at. Right now, with the games we have, my focus is on performances, but I’m confident the club will take care of those matters.”

Newcastle are close to naming a new sporting director following Paul Mitchell’s departure in June, with Nottingham Forest’s Ross Wilson strongly linked to the role.
