Exit plans for Celtic-linked player become clear after Premier League talisman misses FA Cup matchday squad

The Celtic-linked forward was absent from West Ham’s matchday squad for their extra-time FA Cup win over QPR.

As the January transfer window gathers momentum, Celtic remain firmly in the market for a proven goalscorer.

The Hoops returned to winning ways on Saturday with a convincing victory over Dundee United, finding the net with ease as Yang Hyun-jun, Arne Engels, Benjamin Nygren and Daizen Maeda all got on the scoresheet. It marked a strong start to Martin O’Neill’s latest spell in the Parkhead dugout.

Despite the comfortable result, concerns remain in the final third. Both Maeda and substitute Johnny Kenny passed up presentable chances, underlining the ongoing issue with cutting edge in the striker department. Strengthening the number nine role has become a clear priority for Celtic this month.

Experienced West Ham forward Callum Wilson has emerged as a potential option, with O’Neill keen to add proven quality in attack. And after the 33-year-old was omitted entirely from the Hammers’ squad at the weekend, a clearer picture has now emerged regarding his future in east London.

Wilson edging closer to West Ham exit

According to TalkSPORT, Wilson’s contract at West Ham is expected to be terminated within the next week. His absence from the squad for the FA Cup clash against QPR — a tie the Irons won 2-1 after extra time — has further fuelled speculation over an imminent departure.

Wilson has featured sporadically since arriving at the London Stadium in the summer and is currently on a pay-as-you-play deal, reflecting his well-documented injury history. That agreement is due to run until the end of the season, but an early exit now appears increasingly likely.

Despite limited game time, the veteran striker has still managed six goal contributions in the Premier League this campaign. The recent 3-0 loss to Wolves marked the first occasion he completed a full 90 minutes all season.

Wilson began his career in the lower leagues before playing a key role in Bournemouth’s rise to the Premier League in 2015. Across spells with Bournemouth, Newcastle United and West Ham, he has scored 92 top-flight goals.

World Cup ambitions still alive

A move to Celtic could be mutually beneficial. Wilson remains determined to force his way back into England contention ahead of the 2026 World Cup, despite not featuring for the national side since 2023.

More regular football in Glasgow would significantly boost his chances of catching the eye of England boss Thomas Tuchel.

Speaking previously, Wilson said: “The most important thing for me is getting myself in the team and taking opportunities when they come. That’s the only way you put yourself in contention for England. There’s a long way to go before that squad is named, so why not try and make a late push?”

He added in November: “I wouldn’t say I’ve retired from international football at all. There’s a World Cup coming up and I’ve had my eye on that since pre-season. I’m working hard towards it.”
