Newcastle United can acquire a seven-goal midfielder for a mere £20 million, according to Fabrizio Romano. Newcastle United may consider improving their midfield options this summer, as one player is on the brink of a transfer.
After reaching an agreement on personal terms with the newly promoted Premier League team, Newcastle academy graduate Sean Longstaff is believed to be on the brink of joining Leeds United for £12 million. The 27-year-old, who has appeared in 214 matches for Newcastle since advancing through the club’s development system, is currently in the final year of his contract at St.
James’ Park and is expected to depart. Newcastle extended Longstaff’s contract during the 2024/25 season to prevent the player from being released for free this summer. Rather, they appear to be preparing to cash in and accumulate a modest but unadulterated profit in PSR calculations.
The agreement will, in essence, assist in the financing of Anthony Elanga’s transfer from Nottingham Forest. However, Newcastle is hoping to make additional acquisitions this summer, and an additional midfielder is currently being considered. Newcastle’s midfield is already robust in the absence of Longstaff, with Sandro Tonali, Joelinton,
Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley, and Joe Willock. However, Newcastle’s midfield may be undermined by a single or two injuries. Over the past two seasons, Joelinton, Miley, and Willock have all experienced long-term injuries that have restricted their game time.Newcastle United has identified James McAtee as a target. Newcastle has been keeping an eye on James McAtee,
a midfielder for Manchester City, as a prospective midfield option. The 22-year-old recently led the England Under-21s to victory at the European Championship, the culmination of a strong campaign for Manchester City. Despite making 27 appearances for City during the 2024/25 campaign, McAtee only made eight starts in all competitions, scoring seven goals.
In February, he struck a goal against Newcastle after coming off the bench during a 4-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium. The sole exception to his goals is that they were all scored in significant victories for Manchester City, in which they scored four or more goals. The final outcome would not have been affected if McAtee had not scored in those matches.
However, the youthful midfielder is regarded with admiration by numerous clubs, including Newcastle, as a result of his versatility in playing in an attacking midfield role or out wide on the right.Newcastle has recently addressed the right wing position with the imminent acquisition of Elanga.
However, McAtee would undoubtedly assist Eddie Howe in strengthening his squad in anticipation of Champions League football. Man City is considering the possibility of selling McAtee this summer for as little as £20million, as he has only one year remaining on his contract.
Buyback clauses could be implemented by Manchester City, which would discourage Newcastle from considering a potential transaction. City had previously included a sell-on and repurchase clause in James Trafford’s contract with Burnley in 2023. Should they desire, Pep Guardiola’s team has the option to repurchase the goalkeeper for £40 million.
Newcastle is presently in contract negotiations with Burnley to acquire Trafford for an estimated £30 million.Newcastle has recently addressed the right wing position with the imminent acquisition of Elanga.
