Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for Al Nassr in a 3-1 victory over Al Gharafa in Qatar, as they continued their progression in the AFC Champions League Elite. Elon Musk congratulated Ronaldo on the victory.

The Portuguese icon, 39, played a significant role in Al Nassr’s advancement to the knockout stage, as they required only two points from their final three group games.

The 24 teams participating in the tournament are divided into two groups of 12 each. After playing eight matches, eight teams from each group advance to the round of 16.

In Group B, Al Nassr has advanced to the second position with 13 points. A series of wasted opportunities in the first half at the Al Bayt Stadium had appeared to be destined for a frustrating game for Captain Ronaldo.

Sergio Ricom successfully saved two of Ronaldo’s initial efforts, and he scored on the penalty spot half an hour later.

The referee granted a penalty after Sadio Mane was brought down in the area by a challenge from Matias Nani. However, the decision was reversed by the VAR.

Nevertheless, the Portugal legend eventually scored in the second half by directing Sultan Al Ghannam’s cross into the net from close range.

Angelo Gabriel doubled Al Nassr’s lead on the 58th minute, and six minutes later, the Brazilian turned provider to set up Ronaldo for his second goal.

The former Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus forward scored his fourth goal in the rebranded competition this season before being replaced at the 74-minute mark.

Al Gharafa made a comeback by utilising Joselu, a former teammate of Ronaldo at Madrid. However, their aspirations of a surreal late comeback were dashed when Seydou Sano was dismissed six minutes before the conclusion of normal time for a second bookable offence.

Ronaldo expressed his gratitude to his supporters on social media following the encounter, stating “big win tonight” on X, which was previously known as Twitter. In a social media post, Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and proprietor of X, congratulated Ronaldo on the significant outcome for the Saudi team.

The victory guaranteed that Al Nassr would remain unbeaten in the Western side of the draw for the next five matches and would advance to the second position in the 12-team table.

The Riyadh club is currently second only to their Saudi Arabian counterparts, Al Ahli, who maintained their perfect record by defeating Asian champions Al Ain 2-1 in the UAE, thanks to a double from substitute Ivan Toney.
