There’s a good reason why Celtic defender Matt O’Riley has been the subject of a lot of talk over the last 24 hours or so.

The 23-year-old has scored 19 goals and set up 18 others this season, but he was strangely left off Denmark’s 26-person team for EURO 2024 in Germany.

Kasper Hjulmand, the national manager, talked about why he wasn’t in the championships and said it was hard to make because he was in such good shape.

He told them, “Matt has been a great player all season.” We can move around six of the people I chose. Even though it cost Matt, it was the right thing to do. I’m sure he’ll play in a lot of foreign games. There was nothing he could do.

Being as active as O’Riley has been makes it hard to understand why the 52-year-old was chosen. Thomas Gravesen, a former Celtic player, is one of many who have criticized his choice.

Now Mark Wilson has said what he thinks about the call, which has caused a lot of discussion in both Scotland and Denmark.

Mark Wilson on why Matt O’Riley wasn’t picked for Denmark’s team
Wilson said on the Clyde 1 Superscoreboard that he didn’t understand why O’Riley wasn’t in the Denmark team that was going to Germany.

When asked if he was surprised by the change, he said, “Without a doubt, I’ve never really had a chance to look at Denmark’s squad. There will be some good players in there, but for the season Matt O’Riley has had, the goal involvements, the goals scored, playing in the Champions League.”

“I thought he did well in the Champions League as well, so if you’re going after the Scottish league, that’s fine; we’re not the biggest league, but I thought he should have been in that squad at least when he was playing well in a top European competition like the Champions League.”

Wilson is right. O’Riley has not only shown what he can do in the English Premier League, but he has also done well in the Champions League against some of the best teams in Europe.

Who knows what else could be enough to get you chosen if that isn’t it? Still, each boss will make their own choices for reasons that are unique to them.

Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas says that O’Riley is ready for the event and has been training in case he gets a late call, but it’s not clear if that will happen.
