Foden, a star player for Manchester City, didn’t do much in England’s first Euro 2024 game, and Ferdinand, a star player for Manchester United, compared him to an old teammate.

Rio Ferdinand said that Phil Foden was like Juan Sebastian Veron, a failed player for Manchester United, after the Manchester City star’s lackluster performance in England’s first Euro 2024 game.

Foden had a hard time making a difference in England’s 1-0 win over Serbia on Sunday night. The City star was named Premier League Player of the Year last year because he played so well and helped the team win their fourth straight title. However, he had a hard time bringing that form to the international stage earlier this week.

Ferdinand thinks that Foden needs to “dominate” his teammates more and demand the ball more if he wants to do well at the European Championship in Germany. He did this by saying that Foden’s position is similar to Veron’s at United. United paid £28 million for Veron in 2001, but he rarely had a chance to show what he could do. In the next two years, he played 51 league games for the club before being sold to Chelsea.

Ferdinand talked about the game he, Micah Richards, and Cesc Fabregas did for BBC on his FIVE show. “Micah was saying how he felt sorry for Phil and how Gareth Southgate isn’t getting the best out of him,” Ferdinand said.

“To be fair, Cesc just got rid of him and told him, ‘Listen, no, no, no, it’s up to Foden.'” Foden has to go out there, and you’re talking about putting on the right body language and being firm about how you want the ball.

“Jude [Bellingham] has got that in spades and I think if he wants to see the best out of Phil Foden, and I agree with Cesc, he’s got to put his all out there and try and force the pitch and dominate some of his teammates to give him the ball and be the first one to shout.”

“But I’ve seen this before at Man United,” he said. In the middle of the field, Roy Keane asked for the ball. It was a great deal to sign Juan Sebastian Veron. People on the street will never forget this guy with the bandage under his knee.

“He liked to set up plays and get the ball off of everyone else. That’s how he got his rhythm and play.” But Roy Keane won because he was more animated and his personality came out. He was also much more dominating.

“He was that area before and ruled it.” And Veron really gave up, had to be sold, and didn’t do very well at Man United. He was a very good player, though, and I hope Phil doesn’t fall like that.
