Txiki Begiristain has been Manchester City’s Director of Football for 13 years.
His job is now over. The 61-year-old finally quit his job at the end of July, having helped Manchester City win every trophy possible during his time in charge. Pep Guardiola’s arrival at the Etihad Stadium in 2016 was his biggest accomplishment.
Hugo Viana has taken over for the Spaniard at City.
Viana has been working with Begiristain since October and is now the full-time Director of Football at the Manchester club after being helped with the change. Viana has had a busy summer. Begiristain was able to see the Portuguese director up close for months and now talks about what struck him the most.
In a new documentary about Man City, Begiristain talks about his replacement, Viana. The Spaniard says that Viana’s ability to make decisions struck him the most when they worked together.
“Good guy, and calm.” During Man City’s most recent documentary, A Farewell to Txiki, Begiristain talked about Viana. “I can see that a young, energetic sporting director comes in and he is not afraid to make decisions.” Viana is the start of something new at Man City.
The club has been through a lot of changes lately. The Portuguese director, who is 42 years old, will soon have to make the hardest choice of his life: he has to replace Guardiola before he leaves in 2027.
And Ferran Soriano says Hugo Viana has been a great fit. Not only Begiristain, but also Man City’s CEO Ferran Soriano has been pleased with Viana’s work at the Premier League club so far.
Soriano said that the Portuguese director has fit right in with the team. “Is he sure?” Yes. He gets along with others? Yes. Is he calm? Not at all busy.
He said, “Well, maybe we have the new Txiki.” It was easy for him to fit in with the group. He’s now one of us, and I believe that is the best result.
Everyone at Man City seems to like Viana’s work, which is very important because Viana is the man who will lead the Premier League giants into a new age after Guardiola leaves.
