Former Celtic defender Greg Taylor reveals reason for exit regret

Former Celtic defender Greg Taylor has revealed he feels a sense of regret about how his time at the club came to an end.

The Scotland international departed quietly last summer following prolonged uncertainty surrounding his future, and he now admits the manner of his exit left him disappointed — even if he felt the timing to move on was right.

Speaking to Paul Slane on Open Goal, Taylor reflected on his departure and the circumstances around it.

He explained that after six memorable years at Celtic, he had reached a stage in his career where regular football was essential, which ultimately influenced his decision. Taylor revealed that Dinamo Zagreb had shown strong interest in signing him in January, but he was determined to stay through the remainder of the campaign.

At the time, Celtic were still competing in Europe, facing a Champions League play-off against Bayern Munich, while also chasing domestic silverware. Taylor said he never ruled out extending his stay but was focused on seeing out the season. However, the campaign ended on a low note with defeat in the cup final, which made his exit even more emotional.

He also admitted he never had the opportunity to say a proper farewell, as he had not fully decided on his future at the time of the final match.

Taylor’s understated departure was unfortunate given his contribution to the club. Since joining from Kilmarnock in 2019 as a replacement for Kieran Tierney, he collected 11 major honours.

Over the years he battled for his place, reinventing his role as an inverted left-back under Ange Postecoglou. In total, he made 216 appearances for Celtic, scoring nine goals and providing 33 assists.
