For a moment, let’s forget about the talk about Celtic transfers and look back at the team’s 3-0 win over St. Mirren over the weekend.
It was easy for Brendan Rodgers’ team to win away against Stephen Robinson’s team at the SMISA Stadium. This kept Celtic’s two-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
The game wasn’t as tough as it looked like it would be because St. Mirren is always tough to beat in Paisley, but goals from Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, and Alistair Johnston made sure Celtic didn’t make a mistake early in the season.
But some Celtic fans think it should have been more because Daizen Maeda looked like he should have had two penalties on Sunday.
Even though both claims were rejected, Dermot Gallagher, a former FIFA referee, has said what he thinks about whether VAR and the match referee were right not to award two penalty kicks after challenges on Celtic winger Daizen Maeda.
Gallagher: The calls for Celtic penalties were right
Gallagher watched both of Maeda’s challenges on Ref Watch on Sky Sports and said that the judge, Chris Graham, made the right calls.
For the first claim, Gallagher said, “I think Maeda wraps his legs around the defender when the defender goes to play the ball.”
“But I think you should give them (the referees) a little more power.” Tell them, “Look, just decide what to do.” If the VAR says, “Wow, that doesn’t look right,” step in. “But if it’s like that, let the referee handle it.”
Galagher said, “I still don’t think it’s a foul” for Celtic’s second goal when Maeda was clear to score. I believe it is one of them. He stands his ground. I believe what he did shows that.
“He gets up quickly because he doesn’t think I’ll get called for a foul and I can get the ball.” “He’s up there to score.”
It looked like the St. Mirren defender touched the Celtic attacker, so Maeda’s second claim was probably more likely to be true.
But in the end, it didn’t really matter what the score was or what happened because Celtic beat St. Mirren easily.
Let’s just hope that no one talks about missed Celtic penalty claims on Monday and that Brendan Rodgers can lead his team to another win over Rangers on Sunday.
