Why Brendan Rodgers Might Be Drawn to the Southampton FC Job After His Celtic Exit
Southampton FC’s ownership group, Sport Republic, once again find themselves searching for a new manager following the dismissal of Will Still on Sunday evening.
When Still was appointed, Dragan Solak and the rest of the club’s hierarchy appeared ready to give the 32-year-old time to oversee a much-needed rebuild at St Mary’s. However, the problems that plagued Southampton during their 12-point Premier League relegation campaign have persisted into the new Championship season. After 13 matches, the Saints sit 21st in the table, having picked up just 13 points and only two wins.
Despite their poor start, the Southampton board have reportedly drawn up an ambitious shortlist of potential candidates. Among the names linked are Frank Lampard, Mark Robins, a possible reunion with Russell Martin, and Brendan Rodgers, who recently resigned as Celtic’s manager.
Rodgers returned to Parkhead in 2023 following Ange Postecoglou’s move to Tottenham Hotspur and guided Celtic to two more SPFL titles. However, a disappointing start to this season’s domestic and European campaigns prompted his departure last week.
With the position at St Mary’s now open, there are several reasons why Rodgers might find the role appealing.
