Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher reveals why the 39-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer move to Liverpool was not successful
Jamie Carragher, a former defender for Liverpool, said that star Cristiano Ronaldo almost joined the team.
He said Ronaldo was close to moving to Anfield before he signed with Manchester United in 2003.
Carragher said that Liverpool had talked to Ronaldo’s agents but were shocked when it was reported that he was moving to Manchester United at the last minute.
Ronaldo helped Sporting CP beat Manchester United 3-1 in a preseason game in August 2003. He was 18 years old at the time.
He both tempted and scared the Red Devils’ defenders, and legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson was interested in him.
“I would say Cristiano Ronaldo (is the player I most wanted to play with), and the reason I say that is because when he signed for United, I think we were in for him,” Carragher told Express about the events that led up to the transfer saga. Phil Thompson says he thought we had him.
“He was talking to his agent when all of a sudden, “Ronaldo’s gone to United” broke on Sky Sports News. It made me think of what we probably missed in the best Liverpool teams I played on.
“I believe we had world-class or great players in every position for ten years, but I don’t believe we ever had a world-class wide player.”
