Kobbie Mainoo’s rise to fame with Manchester United has been amazing.
There are only 33 games that Kobbie Mainoo has played for Manchester United, but he is about to play for England in an international friendly.
The star, who was born in Stockport, has risen very quickly. His first game in the Premier League wasn’t until the end of November, but he’s since jumped at the chance. He was one of Erik ten Hag’s players who couldn’t be dropped at the end of the season, and he capped it off with an amazing game in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City.
His performance as man of the match and the goal that won the game sealed his spot on the plane to Germany. However, it wasn’t really in question since his great debut in a friendly against Belgium in March. But Gareth Southgate really likes the player and has pushed him up quickly into the England team.
The Three Lions’ Euro 2024 quest starts on Sunday night against Serbia. There looks to be a spot open in the middle of the field next to Declan Rice. Mainoo had a chance to make a name for himself in the warm-up game against Iceland, but he messed up his lines, along with the rest of the England team, and they lost 1-0 at Wembley.
The 19-year-old is in competition with Conor Gallagher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Adam Wharton for a spot in the starting lineup. But Paul Ince, a former defender for Man United and England, thinks the young player isn’t ready for the next level yet.
Ince said, “I think Kobbie Mainoo has done really well this season in a Manchester United team that is having a hard time. It’s all happened so quickly, and I think he has a very experienced head for such a young player.”
It makes sense to me that he is in the team because he doesn’t seem to be bothered by anything. But does he start when you look at England’s defensive midfielders?
“Gareth Southgate can choose how to play.” Does he want two midfielders to sit down and then an eight in front of him? Could he put Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, and Phil Foden in front instead? I think that’s more of an answer.
Ince was on the England team that made it to the semi-finals of the 1996 Euros. He is a big fan of Mainoo but thinks Southgate and United should be patient with the player.
“Is Manoo all set now?” “Of course not, he’s still so young,” he told bet365. “But sometimes you just have to jump in and swim.” You have to stay alive, and I believe he can.
But listen, we shouldn’t put too much stress on him because he’s young and will make mistakes. He made some mistakes in the Iceland game, so I think it will be hard to decide whether to start him.
„It depends on how Southgate wants to fight against Serbia. In the first game, the most important thing is to stay alive. We will have to wait and see if Mainoo starts.
