Former Rangers managerial candidate Kevin Muscat has spoken positively about the club despite ultimately rejecting the opportunity to replace Russell Martin.
The 52-year-old looked close to accepting the job after his representatives met with Rangers chiefs Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe in London. However, his late decision to pull out added further pressure on the already-criticised Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart, who failed to finalise an agreement and have since departed Ibrox. Muscat’s withdrawal forced Rangers to revisit Danny Rohl — who had initially ruled himself out before being tempted back into contention.
Fresh from securing another Chinese Super League title with Shanghai Port, Muscat was complimentary when reflecting on the talks he held with the club’s hierarchy. He said:
“I had really positive discussions with some fantastic people — genuinely professional individuals.
I have a lot of respect for everyone I spoke to. The decision ended up where it ended up.
It’s not really important who made which decision or at what point.”
