Frank Lampard described Coventry’s display as “one of our best” at home after they secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Stoke City F.C. in front of a record crowd.
Coventry took control early on and looked comfortable when Haji Wright nodded home from close range in the first half. However, Stoke levelled against the run of play as Ben Gibson rose to head in from a corner.
Goalkeeper Tommy Simkin produced several key saves to keep the visitors in the contest, and the match appeared destined to finish 1-1. But in stoppage time, Stoke’s defence faltered. A looping ball caused confusion, Simkin failed to deal with it cleanly, and Jack Rudoni reacted quickest as the ball was fumbled in by Gibson in the 94th minute.
Lampard was delighted with both the performance and the resilience shown by his side.
“Spirit was one thing but quality was the other,” he said. “We were fantastic today, one of our best home performances from the first minute. We should have been two or three goals ahead at half-time for our play but football sometimes kicks you where you don’t want it to.
“From zero threat from them, they get a free kick in their own half, launch it into the box, win their first corner and score, which is disheartening. But our first-half performance was brilliant. They had no answer to what we were doing.
“You start to worry when you play that well and it’s still one all, but the character of the team to get it over the line and claim what we fully deserved was brilliant. There were lots of great things from us today.”
