Frank Lampard has addressed Coventry City’s reported interest in Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka, with Birmingham City also monitoring the situation.
The January transfer window presents a crucial opportunity for the Sky Blues to strengthen as they aim to stay ahead of Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough in the Championship title race.
Lampard has already dipped into the market, securing loan deals for Tottenham winger Yang Min-Hyeok and Crystal Palace’s Romain Esse. Attention could now turn to midfield, particularly following Coventry’s 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Stoke City, which allows the club to focus fully on their promotion push.
Onyeka has made just six Premier League appearances for Brentford this season and is reportedly available for a loan move. The Nigeria international was part of the Super Eagles side that reached the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals, losing on penalties to hosts Morocco.
According to the Daily Mail, both Coventry and Championship rivals Birmingham City are interested in taking the 28-year-old on loan. Onyeka spent last season on loan at Augsburg, making 34 appearances across all competitions after falling down the pecking order at Brentford.
Speaking to Coventry Live about potential midfield reinforcements, Lampard played down the need for immediate additions, saying:
“I don’t want to give you the generic answer because I feel like I keep giving it to you.
But when I look at the team, if we can strengthen anywhere — and this is the generic answer — then it is something we should look at. But I am happy with my midfield.”
Coventry already boast a strong midfield unit, with Victor Torp contributing goals and assists, Jack Rudoni offering attacking threat, and Matt Grimes providing control and consistency in the centre of the park.
However, Onyeka’s experience across the Premier League, Bundesliga and Danish top flight could add further depth and quality.
During his loan spell at Augsburg last season, he completed 834 successful passes and won 166 duels, underlining the all-round qualities he could bring to Lampard’s side.
