Frank Lampard slams Swansea fans for booing club legend Matt Grimes on his return

Frank Lampard admitted he was left puzzled by the reaction of Swansea supporters after they booed former club captain Matt Grimes during his first appearance against them since joining Coventry City.

Grimes, who became Lampard’s first permanent signing at the CBS Arena last January, has arguably been the manager’s most influential addition. The midfielder has been a model of consistency, missing no matches through injury, while playing a key role in how Coventry operate on the pitch.

Speaking after Coventry’s 1–0 victory over the Swans, Lampard suggested Grimes’ excellence can sometimes be overlooked because of how regularly he performs at such a high level.

The City boss praised Grimes’ quality, leadership and presence, saying few players in the Championship can consistently deliver the same standards in terms of ability, attitude and captaincy. Lampard added that Grimes’ reliability often means attention shifts elsewhere, simply because his level rarely drops.

Lampard also highlighted the added motivation for the midfielder, given his decade of service to Swansea, and admitted he could not understand why such a player would be jeered by his former supporters. He described Grimes as an outstanding professional and a respected individual who deserved appreciation for his ten years at the club.

Despite the hostile reception, Lampard said Grimes handled the occasion superbly, remaining calm and influential throughout the match and once again proving central to everything Coventry were trying to achieve.
