From despair to hope: Skov Olsen pep talk convinces me smiles will return at Rangers

Brian Laudrup: Rangers’ Pain Gave Me a Sinking Feeling – But Hope Has Returned

Brian Laudrup admits watching Rangers in recent seasons has been a painful experience, describing how his “heart was in his stomach” as he witnessed the club struggle to compete for titles.

From Denmark, the Euro 1992 winner has endured nearly 15 years of frustration as Rangers played second fiddle in Scottish football. But now, the Ibrox legend says that despair has been replaced by optimism and belief that the club can once again reclaim its place at the top.

Laudrup has been encouraged by the work of current manager Danny Rohl and revealed that a personal pep talk with new signing Andreas Skov Olsen has further boosted his confidence in Rangers’ title credentials. The 56-year-old, whose legendary status was sealed with the goal that secured nine-in-a-row under Walter Smith, says the recent revival has been a welcome change.

“Watching from Denmark, it has hurt me in recent years,” Laudrup said. “At times my heart was in my stomach seeing Rangers unable to push for titles. But this season, there’s a sense of calm. The manager has settled things down and even when the team doesn’t play well, they’re still winning games. That hasn’t happened for a long time.”

Laudrup believes Rangers are now genuine title contenders, something that would have been laughed off just months ago. He also backed Skov Olsen to excite supporters, describing the £12m-rated winger as an old-fashioned wide player capable of getting fans off their seats.

Drawing comparisons with his own move to Ibrox in 1994, Laudrup hopes Skov Olsen can rediscover his best form in Glasgow after a difficult spell in the Bundesliga.

“He hasn’t experienced anything like Rangers before,” Laudrup added. “The expectation, the crowd, the atmosphere – it’s incredible. I told him all about it. If he settles, Rangers fans will have a lot to look forward to.”

Laudrup praised Skov Olsen’s ability to take defenders on, create chances, and score goals, while stressing the importance of attackers delivering consistent numbers if Rangers are to win trophies again.
