midfielder Jamie Miley is striving for a consistent spot in Newport County’s starting XI. Under a season-long contract, the 20-year-old joined the League Two team on August 29; less than a week after his EFL Trophy debut against Cheltenham Town, he underwent hernia surgery. That kept Miley out for about six weeks before he came back on Tuesday night, playing seventy minutes in the 2-0 triumph of The Exiles against Gillingham.

“It felt great to be out there; it’s been a long time coming,” Miley remarked following the game. “Although injuries during the past two weeks has been a tough period, I was happy to get back on the field and score three points. “I discovered I was scheduled to be playing yesterday morning ( Monday). Straight away, I emailed my family; they expressed great delight and indicated they would be watching.As a midfielder, the game was somewhat different from my first game against Cheltenham in the EFL Trophy—a lot more second balls and a little of back and fourth—but you have to get used to that. Right now, as a team, we are simply eager for the upcoming game against Fleetwood.


Having seen Miley regularly for Eddie Howe’s first-team in pre-season, the Magpies are keenly observing his development at Newport.Miley played friendlies against SpVgg Unterhaching, Hull City and Urawa Red Diamonds before making his senior St James’ Park bow against Girona, younger brother Lewis out due of a metatarsal fracture and Sandro Tonali still suspended at the time. Speaking following the Girona victory, Howe said: “It’s a lazy comparison but it was a very Lewy Miley type performance and I mean that as a big compliment because he was really composed on the ball and very industrious off the ball, I think he really helped us. “Good tactically, which is difficult for someone so young to deliver. As always with Jamie, he is quite cool and collected. That will have been a turning point in his career, and I loved his performance.
